2017 Coaching Staff

Matt Ortega Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator

Education: (1993-1997) Graduate of Saint Francis University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and Secondary Education, where he also played football and ran track.

Coaching Experience: (1997) Running back Coach at Saint Francis University, (1998-2002) Defensive Coordinator at Lancaster McCaskey High School, (2003) Defensive Coordinator at Harrisburg High School, (2004- 2008) Head Football Coach at York High School. Coach Ortega has coached 31 Division 1 players and over 50 Division 2 football players. Career Record as Head Coach 112-41. 

Career: Coach Ortega teaches 7th Grade Science at South Brandywine Middle School. Coach and his wife Corrie and three sons Ricky (16), Tommy (13), and Matt Jr (10) reside in Coatesville.


James Cantafio Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks

Coaching Experience: Pennsylvania Hall of Fame Coach has been a head coach for 32 years with 262 wins. Jim has led teams to win 12 league championships and has received 10 coach of the year honors. He is the only coach in Pennsylvania history to lead three schools to District Titles and State Play-off berths and to take four schools to league championships. He is also the only coach in Pennsylvania history to have two of his Quarterbacks selected for the Nike Elite 11.


EJ Moyer Linebackers/Special Teams

Education: Graduate of Penn State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Ed. Master’s Degree from West Chester University in Physical Science. Pitched at Penn State in the Big 10 Conference.

Coaching Experience: St. Joseph’s Prep Linebacker’s Coach and Offensive Tendency Breakdown Coordinator. In 2013 was Defensive Coordinator for West Chester East High School. Prior to that held multiple positions with Malvern Prep beginning in 2003 and finished in 2012.

Career: Coach Moyer teaches Earth Science at Marsh Creeks 6th Grade Center in the Downingtown Area School District. 


Steve Brazzle Defensive Line Coach

Education: Graduate of Coatesville Area High School where he lettered in basketball, football, and track & field. A three-time All Ches-mont and All-Area Selection in football, Brazzle continued his playing career at Florida A&M University where he majored in Criminal Justice. During his tenure with the Rattlers, Brazzle was a four-year starter on the offensive line. After receiving rookie of the year, honors, and multiple all conference awards Brazzle entered the 2010 NFL draft as the #5 ranked Center in the nation. He received NFL workouts before signing with the Pittsburgh Power of the AFL. He played for multiple teams, such as, Philadelphia Soul, Reading Express, and York Capitals.

Coaching Experience: Pequea Valley High School Offensive and Defensive Line Coach (3 years).

Career: Coach Brazzle is employed by CCIU. Coach and his wife Alana reside in Coatesville.


Damien Henry Special Teams

Education: (1990-1993) Clarion University.

Experience: 4 Year Letter Winner and 1st Team All-Conference Running Back in 1993. Assistant Coach at J.P. McCaskey High School (12 years), Assistant Coach in Track at J.P. McCaskey High School (11 years), Assistant Freshman Head Coach in Girls Basketball (6 years). Coach Henry is the Head Boys Track and Field Coach at Coatesville Area High School.

Career: Coach Henry is 5th grade teacher at King’s Highway Elementary. Coach Henry resides in Coatesville.


Pete Susi Running Backs

Education: (1994-1998) B.S. in Education from East Stroudsburg University.

Coaching Experience: Assistant Coach at J.P. McCaskey High School (4 years), Assistant Coach at Downingtown East (5 years), and Assistant Coach at Downingtown West (2 years).

Career: Coach Susi resides in Coatesville with his wife Melanie and their two children Harrison (10) and Delaney (8).


Darryl Daniel Wide Receiver Coach

Education: Graduated from Conestoga Valley in 1994. Two-time Wide Receiver of the year and kick returner of the year in the Lancaster-Lebanon league. Reebok High School All American two time All State at Wide Receiver, and Big 33 MVP. Graduated from Syracuse University in 1999 with a Psychology degree. Three-year starter for the NFL from 1999-2002 for the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Career: Coach Daniel has his own business the Darryl Daniel Wide Receiver and Football Skills Academy which was started to help develop young men on and off the field. 


Anthony Young Defensive Backs

Education: B.S. in Marketing & Education from Temple University.

Coaching Experience: NJ All-State Defensive Back and Wide Receiver, Temple University two-time All-American, (1981-1984) four-year starter and Captain at defensive back and punt returner (holds 7 All-Time records), (1985) 3rd round draft pick of Indianapolis Colts, immediate starter at free safety, All-NFL rookie selection, (1988) retired due to injury, (1988-1989) Temple University Assistant Defensive Back Coach under Bruce Arians, (1990-1992) Cardinal Dougherty High School Defensive Coordinator, (1992-1998) Northern Virginia Football Alliance Camp Director, Inducted into Temple University Sports Hall of Fame 2004, (2004-2014) Bert Bell Youth League Coach.

Career: Coach Young has worked in Healthcare Management and Marketing for the past 20 years. Coach Young has three sons Jordon, Avery, and Aaron and resides in Coatesville.


Mick Bonner Offensive Lineman Coach

Education: B.S. from West Chester University.

Coaching Experience: (2008-2011) Radnor High School, (2012) Upper Darby High School, (2013-2015) Ridley High School.

Career: Coach Bonner is a Health and Physical Education teacher for the Upper Darby School District. Coach Bonner and his wife Angelique live in Oxford with their daughter Francesca. 


Larry Austin Head Freshman Coach

Education: BA in Political Science from the University of Connecticut in 1997. Attended Coatesville Area High School.

Coaching Experience: Coach Larry Austin played for Coatesville in the early 90's where he led the Red Raiders to a 10-0-1 record in the 91-92 season as QB. Larry attended NC State University to further his education on a full athletic scholarship to play football, he later transferred to the University of Connecticut on a full athletic scholarship to play football. Larry’s coaching career started when he suffered a career ending injury to his shoulder his Junior year at Uconn and there he became grad assistant coaching DB's and scout team offense. Coatesville Area High School Defensive Back Coach 2001-2007 along with coaching boy’s basketball. Larry stop coaching football to pursue a career in Student Affairs with Cheyney University. Larry served as the Assistant Director of Student Activities for Cheyney University of PA from 2008-2013. Larry has since returned to Coatesville solely, and his love for Coatesville has him excited to be a part of Red Raider Football Family again as a coach and mentor. Larry is also the current 7th grade boy’s basketball coach at South Brandywine Middle School.

Career: Larry is the owner of Feature's Restaurant Takeout in Coatesville. Larry is a part of the Masonic Fraternity Lily of Valley #59 F & A Masons of Pennsylvania!


Mike Ahlum Assistant Freshman Coach and assist the Varsity team on game days

Education: Graduated from Girard College High School in 1968. Went to West Chester State College which is now WCU, graduated in 1972. Played four years of football at West Chester.

Coaching Experience: (1973-1978) Haverford Township High School Assistant Coach, (1979-1983) Radnor High School was the Head Freshman Coach and from 1982-1983 was the Defensive Coordinator, (1984-2006) Haverford Township High School Assistant Coach and from 1984-2003 was the Head Boys Track and Field Coach and from 1985-1988 was the Defensive Coordinator and from 1989-2003 was the Head Freshman Coach, (2007) Prep Charter in Philadelphia Defensive Coordinator, (2008-2014) Haverford Township High School Assistant Freshman Coach, (2010 to present) Coatesville Area High School Assistant Track and Field Coach for both Boys and Girls team.

Career: Coach Ahlum hopes to continue coaching both football and track & field at Coatesville for the remainder of his career. Coach Ahlum has two daughters Nancy and JoBeth.
